Homemade And Easy Ecological Cleaning Solutions
In Colorado Spring is usually marked by our last snow storm. With that last storm we all get to look forward to Spring thunderstorms that rush in with the speed ,noise and power of stampeding buffalo. Fortunately they leave just as quick, leaving the air smelling crisp and fresh. Below are some simple recipes for ecological cleaners, for the ritual spring cleaning that will hopefully make your home smell as fresh as crisp air after one of our spring storms.
*Try adding essential oils to any of the recipes for fragrance*
DILUTED WHITE VINEGAR
White vinegar is a powerhouse of natural cleaners. It’s gentle enough to use on most surfaces including hardwood floors and with its mild acid base it will cut through tough bathroom projects like hard water deposits and soap scum. It will also absorb odors, not just cover them. Try some of these uses for white vinegar:
Fabric softener 3/4 to 1 cup to rinse cycle
Soak shower heads – undiluted
Coffee and Tea pots
Grout cleaner
BAKING SODA
Baking soda is a great alternative to commercial scouring powders, you can even make your own tooth whitening paste with it! Try using it as an agent to absorb odors. One of its best uses is to neutralize acid, if you get battery acid on your clothes or hands, mix 4 TSB baking soda with 12 Oz water and apply. You can also use the same to clean your car battery terminals .
MILK
Milk, that’s right, I said it – MILK! Your great grandmother would tell you that it takes a protein to remove a protein, so for issues like blood in clothes and for other bodily fluids, try soaking in milk.
